• Anne Hathaway confirmed that “The Princess Diaries 3” is in the works.
  • She’ll reprise her role as Queen Mia Thermopolis of Genovia in the sequel.
  • Chris Pine, who starred in “The Princess Diaries 2,” said he doesn’t know anything about the third film.

“The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” actor Chris Pine said doesn’t know anything about the movie’s sequel, “The Princess Diaries 3.”

“The Princess Diaries” sees Princess Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) learn that her late father was the prince of a fictional European country, Genovia.

The sequel, 2004’s “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” charts her rise from the country’s princess to its queen as she succeeds her grandmother, Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews).

Both films were hits at the box office, raking in a combined total of $300 million. It has taken 20 years for the third film to materialize.

In 2023, Hathaway told People, it can take a long time for projects to get off the ground. She said: “It’s a process that requires patience, and so everybody should consider themselves a part of the movie business now, because this is how long it actually takes to make things.”

With “The Princess Diaries 3” now officially in the works, here’s what we know about it.

Anne Hathaway announced on Instagram that she’s returning for “The Princess Diaries 3.”

Reports of the third film being commissioned have swirled since late 2022, but it wasn’t until October 2024 that Hathaway confirmed she would reprise her role as Thermopolis.

She posted a video on Instagram counting from one to three alongside clips from the previous movies, as well a Variety article reporting that “Crazy Rich Asians” scribe Adele Lim would direct the third film.

She wrote in the caption: “Miracles happen, back to Genovia with Adele Lim, Disney, Somewhere Pictures. The Fairytale continues.”

Chris Pine doesn’t know anything about “The Princess Diaries 3.”

Although Thermopolis is in a relationship with Devereaux when she becomes queen, he doesn’t become king. He refuses to take the crown because his uncle, the Viscount Mabrey (John Rhys-Davies), tried to usurp Thermopolis.

Fans have been very vocal about wanting to see Pine return.

Asked about “The Princess Diaries 3” on Tuesday’s episode of “Today With Hoda & Jenna,” Pine said: “I don’t know anything, Call Disney! Call Bob Iger!”

When pushed about whether he’d had any conversations about returning, he added: “The answer is I’ve gotta see. I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic.”

The sequel doesn’t have a release date: it is still in development and filming is yet to start.
