Netflix has continued to expand its vast library of true crime content in recent months, as subscribers flock to shows and documentaries with unique stories about crime, murder, and romance.
“Jailbreak: Love on the Run” involves all three.
It revolves around Casey White, who was given a 75-year prison sentence for attempted murder and robbery in 2015.
He was incarcerated in Lauderdale County Jail in Alabama when he also confessed to the 2015 murder of an older woman named Connie Ridgeway.
But he later pleaded not guilty to the crime by reason of insanity and the case was suspended in July, 2023.
During his time in Lauderdale, he met corrections officer Vicky White. Although they shared the same last name, they were not related, and they started a relationship.
As detailed in “Jailbreak: Love on the Run,” Vicky broke Casey out of prison on April 29, 2022, by informing other staff members that she was escorting him to the courthouse in Florence, Alabama to undergo a psychological evaluation.
Instead, the pair fled the area and traveled to Evansville, Indiana, where they stayed in a motel.
They had been on the run for 11 days when authorities were tipped off by a car wash employee who saw Casey and Vicky cleaning their truck on May 9, 2022.
That same day, the authorities quickly pursued them onto the highway until they exited into a field, and a police vehicle rammed into them, which overturned the truck.
Vicky died by suicide when officers approached the vehicle to apprehend the pair.
Casey White remains in prison, and he was almost charged with Vicky White’s death.
After being re-captured, Casey was originally charged with felony murder for Vicky’s death, since her death was a result of aiding his escape from Lauderdale County Jail.
On May 5, 2023, Casey agreed to a deal in which he pleaded guilty to first-degree escape in order to not be prosecuted for felony murder, CNN reported.
While delivering his guilty plea, Casey apologized to Vicky’s mother, Alabama news outlet, WHNT, reported. “It wasn’t supposed to go that way,” he said.
Casey received a life sentence for the prison escape, and he remains in the William E. Donaldson Correction Facility in Bessemer, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.
In February 2024, Fox News reported that the Lauderdale District Attorney’s office dropped the capital murder case against Casey for the 2015 murder of Ridgeway that he previously confessed to.
Casey claimed that he was hired to kill Ridgeway. But her son, Austin Williams, told Fox News that he doesn’t believe the confession was legitimate.
He said: “Casey White’s confession is basically BS. There’s really no other evidence against him. The confessions mentioned people that were associated, kind of sort of, with my mother. They kind of sort of made sense, but it wasn’t easy to prove, I guess, the money changing hands.”
