Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the , and sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the lost 0.86%, while the index declined 0.60%, and the index lost 1.08%.

The best performers of the session on the were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:), which rose 3.15% or 1.23 points to trade at 40.33 at the close. Meanwhile, Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:) added 1.95% or 3.84 points to end at 200.91 and Nike Inc (NYSE:) was up 1.94% or 1.78 points to 93.45 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:), which fell 19.74% or 53.61 points to trade at 218.01 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:) declined 3.38% or 14.50 points to end at 414.67 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:) was down 1.52% or 6.94 points to 450.23.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were HP Inc (NYSE:) which rose 16.95% to 38.36, Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:) which was up 13.42% to settle at 81.55 and Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:) which gained 5.48% to close at 8.08.

The worst performers were Salesforce Inc (NYSE:) which was down 19.74% to 218.01 in late trade, ServiceNow Inc (NYSE:) which lost 11.98% to settle at 643.50 and Hormel Foods Corporation (NYSE:) which was down 9.71% to 30.79 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Summit Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:) which rose 272.06% to 10.92, JE Cleantech Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:) which was up 84.92% to settle at 1.30 and Momentus Inc (NASDAQ:) which gained 66.35% to close at 0.87.

The worst performers were Maxeon Solar Technologies Ltd (NASDAQ:) which was down 34.73% to 2.03 in late trade, Nutanix Inc (NASDAQ:) which lost 23.10% to settle at 56.36 and Sonoma Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:) which was down 21.15% to 0.21 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2093 to 754 and 65 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1926 rose and 1417 declined, while 134 ended unchanged.

Shares in HP Inc (NYSE:) rose to 52-week highs; up 16.95% or 5.56 to 38.36. Shares in Summit Therapeutics PLC (NASDAQ:) rose to 3-years highs; up 272.06% or 7.99 to 10.92.

The , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.33% to 14.47.

Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.03% or 0.75 to $2,363.35 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 1.67% or 1.32 to hit $77.91 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.77% or 1.48 to trade at $81.95 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.29% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.48% to 156.84.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.32% at 104.70.
